There is something really special about photographing families in their home. Entering your home – your safe haven – the place where memories are made, your babies are brought home, fingerprints are on the windows and laughter echos in the halls is always such an honor. It can feel stressful wanting to make your home look picture perfect (trust me, I know first hand. I’m the one scrubbing our house from top to bottom before any company) and apologizing for the mess. Let me tell you, there is no need to apologize – you will not see any mess in your photographs (unless you want to!) Below I’m sharing a few helpful tips and tricks to prepare your home for your next newborn or family in home session!

PLANNING YOUR SESSION

• Consider the time of day you schedule your in-home session for. Typically in home newborn or family sessions start between 9am-10am which provides the best daylight!
• In home sessions do not have to include your entire home! I highly suggest selecting a few spaces – the ones with the most natural light – that you would love photos in. When I arrive I will also scope out your house and let you know my thoughts! We can also take pictures in your front and backyard.

THE DAY BEFORE OUR SESSION

• Hide any clutter you don’t want in your photographs.
• Set aside any special items you may want to include in your session.
• Lay out and steam/iron your outfits for our session.
• Paint your nails, get your hair done, or do anything that will make you feel beautiful!

THE DAY OF OUR SESSION

• Before our session starts, turn off all overhead lights, open up the blinds and let the natural light pour in!
• Put on your favorite playlist to get you pumped up! It helps everyone get into a good headspace and creates opportunities for sweet dance party images.
• Diffuse some aromatherapy, pour yourself a drink or do whatever helps you relax to create a calming space for your family!
